Some really cool people visit me at Total Performance to talk about training, and I love spending time with different coaches talking shop. Recently, I got an e-mail from my friend Ted Rath (Detroit Lions Strength & Conditioning) telling me that Matt McGettigan from the Air Force Academy was coming into town and wanted to set up a visit while he was in Detroit. I had never met Matt, but the thought of getting to learn more about such a cool place was exciting.
The minute I met Matt, I was impressed. He’s a very intelligent, experienced coach, but he comes off as about the most humble man I’ve ever met. We spent about an hour going over acceleration mechanics and techniques, and talked about what he was doing with his team.
Eventually, I asked if I could turn on a video camera and tape some of our conversation. I figured that, if I was enjoying my conversation with Matt this much, you’d probably enjoy it too. Of course, Matt was totally up for it, so I got him talking about some great stuff for about 15 minutes.
In the video below, we talk about what it’s like at the Air Force Academy, the direction he sees the field heading, and what he’d do differently if he could go back in time and start his coaching career all over again. A lot of coaches wouldn’t allow their egos to admit they’d do anything differently, but Matt has a unique perspective on his career and coaching style.
I really enjoyed my time with Coach McGettigan, and I think you’ll enjoy listening to him too.
